Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in Essex carries out testing of their full range of prototype models, from Fiestas to Transits. Vehicle performance is tested at locations representing the most extreme temperature conditions, from the frozen wastes of Finland to the arid deserts of Arizona.
Ford’s test engineers needed a means of simultaneously monitoring 16 separate temperatures on different parts of the vehicle, together with the facility to display remotely any 4 of those readings. The ambient temperature range had to cover extremes from -40∞ C to 85∞ C. Accuracy and reliability was obviously a key requirement, and Ford also specified that the device be robust, light and compact to enable safe dashboard mounting.
The AiiD Solution
AiiD custom designed and manufactured the Tempview16, which accurately measures to within 1∞C across the specified operational ranges. Requiring no set-up or programming, the Tempview16 simply plugs in and is ready to monitor the 16 channels of thermocouples. The device fits in the boot of vehicles, eliminating problems caused by in-cab temperature variations, while controls can be easily accessed via the dashboard-mounted display unit.
As a result of implementing the Tempview16, Ford are able to carry out tests much more efficiently, safely and reliably. Pre-test equipment accuracy tests have been automated utilising the Tempview16's serial interface, tasks which previously took two or three hours can now be done in five to ten minutes, with much more accurate results. By working closely with Ford Test Engineers, AiiD were able to build in refinements and improvements throughout the development process, and it is expected that their products will continue to play a significant part in the development of future Ford prototypes.
